Blackjack is one of the few casino games where your decisions actually matter. Unlike slots, where every spin is random, blackjack gives you the opportunity to reduce the house edge through smart play. That's what makes it so popular.
The Basic Rules
The goal of blackjack is simple: get a hand value as close to 21 as possible without going over ("busting"), while also beating the dealer's hand.
Card values:
- Number cards (2-10) are worth their face value
- Face cards (Jack, Queen, King) are worth 10
- Aces can be worth 1 or 11, whichever benefits your hand more
A "blackjack" is an Ace plus a 10-value card. It's the best hand and usually pays 3:2.
How a Round Works
- You place your bet
- You and the dealer each receive two cards. Your cards are face-up; the dealer has one face-up and one face-down (the "hole card")
- You decide your action: Hit, Stand, Double Down, or Split
- After all players act, the dealer reveals their hole card and plays according to fixed rules
- Hands are compared and bets are settled
Your Options at the Table
- Hit — Take another card
- Stand — Keep your current hand
- Double Down — Double your bet and receive exactly one more card
- Split — If you have two cards of the same value, split them into two separate hands
- Surrender — Some games let you forfeit half your bet to give up a bad hand
Basic Strategy: The Essentials
Basic strategy tells you the mathematically best action for every possible hand combination. Here are the most important rules:
- Always stand on 17 or higher
- Always hit on 8 or below
- Double down on 11 when the dealer shows 2-10
- Always split Aces and 8s
- Never split 10s or 5s
- Stand on 12-16 when the dealer shows 2-6 (the dealer is likely to bust)
- Hit on 12-16 when the dealer shows 7 or higher
The House Edge
With perfect basic strategy, the house edge in blackjack drops to around 0.5%. That makes it one of the most player-friendly casino games available. Without strategy, the house edge can climb to 2% or more.
Online Blackjack Tips
- Learn basic strategy first — Print out a strategy chart and reference it while you play. Online casinos don't mind.
- Start at low-stakes tables — Get comfortable with the flow before betting bigger.
- Avoid insurance bets — The "insurance" side bet has a high house edge and isn't worth it in the long run.
- Try free/demo mode first — Most online casinos offer free blackjack. Use it to practice.
- Look for games that pay 3:2 for blackjack — Avoid tables that pay 6:5 as they significantly increase the house edge.
